It is especially important after a year with so many schools going virtual due to the effects of COVID. We saw how vital it was that our kids have a quiet, organized, and comfortable workstation where they could do homework and be creative.

Today, I’m partnering with The Carpet & Rug Institute to bring you my 5 top things to consider when setting up a workstation for your kids.

But I’m also sharing the perks of carpeting in your children’s rooms and work areas as your first step. Because CRI understands that any time you create a quality setting for a child, a comfortable carpeted area is an ideal start to a great space.

Not only is carpet warm and comfortable underfoot, but it also dampens sound making for a quieter space, and it improves indoor air quality making for a healthier space for our kids.

Learn more about the benefits of carpet here.

Let’s dive into those 5 considerations when setting up a back-to-school workstation for either school or homework:

1. Find A Quiet Spot

It may not be real estate, but location is still everything! If your child can’t concentrate, schoolwork or homework will be slow going and they may even lag behind.

Whether it is a corner in their bedroom, a small closet converted into a workspace, or just a quiet spot in the living room, make sure it is conducive to learning!

During quarantine times, we learned how hard it was to find quiet spaces when the whole family is suddenly working from home. But we managed to dampen the sound in spaces by adding lots of soft goods; carpeted rooms, curtains, plush pillows, and cushioned furniture all help absorb sound.

2. Choose Comfort

Every child is different but learns best in the environment they are most comfortable in.

For my daughter, that means a desk space in the corner of her room with an adjustable chair when doing computer work. And it also means a plush carpeted spot with floor pillows for her to sprawl out when reading.

Often we assume all learning has to be done at a desk, but after years of homeschooling, I discovered that kids learn more effectively when the environment is catered to their particular needs.

3. Keep It Well Stocked

Don’t give your kids any excuse not to finish a project… make sure your child has everything they could possibly need for the entire school year at their fingertips.

Check and double-check the school supply list, and it can’t hurt to have more supplies than needed. When kids feel creative, they may burn through those supplies faster than expected. You want to ensure they don’t run short right when an assignment is due!

4. Make It Easy To Stay Organized

The right combination of bins and organizers will help your child keep track of what they need. It also helps them easily keep the space tidy!

Every item should have a clear location. Label everything if needed, and err on the side of more bins and holders rather than less.

Don’t forget to consider other aspects of organization other than storage. This includes a calendar for them to keep track of the schedule, a place to tack notes, etc.

5. Personalize It

Make the space special for your child! Let him or her add their own decorative touches because they should feel a comfort and a connection with their own workspace.

When your kids have a great space to do their homework or virtual schoolwork, you are giving them much needed tools for success!

Refreshing Your Child’s Bedroom for Spring on a Budget

This post from Modern Day Moguls is part of the 2021 Beauty of Carpet Spring campaign.

Springtime is the time for new beginnings as well as room refreshes! This go-around we are working on my youngest daughter’s room. She would describe her current room as “not my style” or “too mom-ish.” She says these like it’s a bad thing. A few years ago we ended up ditching our guest bedroom for my office and in turn, made her room suitable for guests.

When doing a room refresh, especially for those with finicky taste, I like to keep things as simple and budget-friendly as possible. Keeping with the same furniture and floor coverings really helps make this possible. Also, letting little ones feel like they are part of the process helps so much.

  • There is a preconceived notion that carpet is too vanilla but there are so many styles, colors, and patterns available that there is literally something for everyone. A soft, warm cushion underneath little feet in the morning is always in style. If you want to spice it up a bit, I love adding a throw rug to the top of a carpet for a bit of color without a huge expense.
  • When the girls get going and bouncing off the walls it really helps dampen the sound of gymnastics tumbles while keeping them safe from slips and falls.
  • After doing a bit of research on Carpet & Rug Institute, turns out new carpet is the lowest VOC-emitting flooring choice available. CRI’s Green Label Plus program is a third-party certification that demonstrates which products are among the lowest emitting carpet, adhesive, and cushion products on the market. The vast majority of carpet sold in the US is certified Green Label Plus. It acts as a passive air filter, trapping dust, pollen, and particles- which removes them from the breathing zone. Which is so important in our littles’ spaces.
  • Since our air quality is so bad outside right now, we are always trying to improve indoor air quality and carpet supports healthier spaces – including people with asthma and allergies. I am forever trying to figure out ways to help my girls keep their rooms clean and manageable and carpet really helps keep the dust down. Updated asthma/allergy guidelines from the National Institute of Health’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) do not include recommendations to remove carpet as a way to treat asthma and allergies

How to Design a Multigenerational Space with Carpet

Design Inspired by Heritage and Family

This post from Black Southern Belle is part of the 2021 Beauty of Carpet Spring campaign.

My husband and I both work from home and have been fortunate to spend time with my parents and with their grandchildren. Our weekdays are often spent at their home, and I’ve been looking to do something extra special for them. I decided to surprise my parents by transforming their upstairs suite into a multifunctional, multigenerational one inspired by our families Gullah Culture and Black Veterans; my dad is a Navy Veteran.

Designing with Carpet

As a gift to my parents who have so generously been taking care of the kids last year and this year, I decided to update their guest suite for them to enjoy with the kids. I designed the suite from the floor up, and I turned to the Carpet and Rug Institute for tips and ideas. They offer great advice and expertise for using carpets in the home that allow you to appreciate and learn more about The Beauty of Carpet and be sure to look up the hashtag #beautyofcarpet on social media for more inspiration.  As for the beauty of carpet in my parent’s home, their suite has a cozy tan-colored carpet, ideal for our little ones to play around on and comfortable for my parents. Carpets improve air quality and help to reduce noise, which is useful in an older house.

I always love adding seasonal touches to the bedrooms. They’re the coziest rooms in the house because they’re carpeted! I can’t wait to share more images of our new carpeting! It was just installed two weeks ago, and it feels SO good! So nice to have fresh carpet in time for the cold winter months.

  1. It’s soft underfoot! I don’t know about you guys, but I love getting out of bed and having comfort below. And my younger kids love to wrestle with their dad! Having carpet allows for a comfortable place for playing.
  2. There are so many stylish options! I’ve been dreaming of a shorter pile carpet with a subtle pattern, and I finally found exactly what we’ve been looking for.
  3. Noise reduction! Let’s be honest. A family of six (plus a dog) gets loud. I like that carpet traps the noise a bit.
  4. It’s a healthy choice! There’s a big misconception about living with carpet and how it affects allergies. After doing a bit of research on the CRI website turns out new carpet is the lowest VOC-emitting flooring choice available. It actually acts as a passive air filter, trapping dust, pollen, and particles- which removes them from the breathing zone.
  5. Carpet is a conservation benefit! In colder months, carpet retains warm air longer.

When it was time to start considering new flooring for my children’s rooms, for a very short time we tossed around the idea of putting a hard surface option in their rooms, and then when I put some thought into how my children live in their rooms it was evident that carpet was the best choice. My children sit on the floor a lot, both of them for different reasons even though they have chairs and desks in their rooms. With both of them doing remote school during this season, I often find my son laid out on the floor doing schoolwork, practicing his instrument, lifting weights, and talking to his friends on the phone. As a budding ballerina, my daughter spends a lot of time on the floor doing her ballet stretches, in addition to her hair and practicing her makeup application skills in front of her mirror.

When choosing the color, I decided to go with a longer pile than we had before, as well as a darker color to add more contrast. I like to think I offered them a more comfortable option for when they are sitting on the floor and a color that worked well with the styling throughout our home for a cohesive look.

In addition to the style and comfort, I wanted the house to feel cozy and warm during the winter months, not to mention the noise reduction it offers when my son goes to strumming on his viola and my daughter decides that her workouts need to include jumping jacks and a few other dance jumps that she works on. The most important benefit to carpet is it increases indoor air quality by filtering and trapping dust, pollen, and other particles in the air, removing them from the breathing zone.

I just recently replaced the carpet in my office as well, and I am in love. Carpet serves so many purposes, and style is just one of them. Our master bedroom is long overdue for new flooring and will get new carpet at the top of the year, once we repaint and scrape the ceiling. Stay tuned to see what we do with our master bedroom!

I have a toddler and a baby who spend most of their time playing and crawling on the floor. The kids play all throughout the house with their toys and books strewn everywhere. Our two year old is very active and our baby will be walking soon, so I wanted to create a dedicated play space just for them. The playroom needed to be safe, cozy, healthy, and inviting to two little ones.

We have a historic home with hardwood floors throughout the house, so the first step to designing this room was choosing a carpet that made sense for us, we settled on a stylish, textured tile carpet. We complemented the carpet with a brown leather daybed, a tent, and creative storage.

We wanted the space to be gender neutral for both Jackson and Savannah, but also to flow with the rest of our home with the Black Art collection and plaid (a favorite of mine). I hope our playroom helps to inspire your playroom or children’s rooms and how best to incorporate carpet into your home. There is a carpet style, color, and pattern for any and every room.

Carpet Tiles

Tiled carpet gives our playroom a soft cushion underfoot and helps to reduce noise from our little ones feet or toys.

Breathe Easy

Carpets support healthy living, by improving indoor air quality.

Simple Tips for Turning a Room into a Classroom

This blog post is part of the Beauty of Carpet campaign from Thistlewood Farms.

We just found out that our local schools are starting out online.

Right now, for the first three weeks, online learning is the current education situation.

My online learners are teenagers in high school, but my sister-in-law has three littles and one kind of not-so-little-any-more student that live at her house.

We’ve all been living footloose and fancy-free with our summer vacation, but school starts in a week here in Texas.

Just between us?

I’m an amazing aunt and Westleigh is an amazing cousin and we wanted to start their online school year off right, so we went shopping and surprised them with new school supplies.

And helped them get the room ready for online school and whatever the rest of 2020 holds.

If you need help creating a space for online learning?

Here are some simple tips for turning a room into a classroom.

WELCOMING LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

We made sure that the room is light and bright and airy with warm and cozy carpeting on the floor. The carpet provides a soft cushion for little feet and helps reduce noise in the learning environment.

Carpet also helps improve air quality in the space and it’s so easy to keep clean for students with asthma and allergies.

Students can also spread out on the floor because there’s a cozy surface to read or work on, too.

Modern Farmhouse Nursery with Carpet

This blog post is part of the Beauty of Carpet campaign from Sleep in the City.

Carpet vs. Wood Flooring: We ended up choosing wall-to-wall carpet for this farmhouse nursery room (we have wood floors everywhere else) for a bunch of reasons: not only are wood floors chillier at night for feedings, but carpet brings a healthier aspect to the nursery and Easton’s sensitive nose. Allergies are common in our family, as is asthma, and having carpet in the nursery supports healthier living and improving air quality (goodbye dust bunnies). Carpet in your home can also dampen the sound of toys falling over, adults walking, and the pitter-patter of little feet, so your new baby can nap in peace in their beautiful new nursery. You can visit The Carpet & Rug Institute here to enter a sweepstakes to win a $500 Visa gift card to brighten up your nursery or any room of the house with fresh new carpet for the summer!
